In case I haven’t been rattling on enough, I broke my leg. I can’t put any weight on it so I’m housebound and bored out of my little mind. I work from home during the week but at the weekend… Well things needed to get a little more interesting than a night in watching Midsomer Murders.
Ever since Santa dropped off the ‘Girls’ boxset at Christmas I’ve been planning to have a few fellow fans over for a Girls themed screening party. With a little too much time on my hands, I decided to go all out with the Girls theme – or at least as all out as you can with one of your legs permanently propped up in the air.
How to throw a Girls themed screening party
I love a good paper invite as much as the next person, but a text full of emojis à la Shoshannna is much more appropriate. Whip out your phone and save a fortune on embossed monogrammed cards and send a stream of random emojis instead.
There ain’t no party like a fancy dress party, am I right? Get your besties to complete this quiz and tell them to turn up dressed as the Girls character Buzzfeed determines they are.
Tacos like Hannah served at her dinner party at the start of series three. Serve with homemade sweet potato fries and a simple chili dish. Or a takeaway works really well too…
And cupcakes for dessert. Obvs.
All my guest were driving and I can barely make it up the stairs sober at the moment so we had to lay off the booze. But just because there ain’t no piña in that colada doesn’t mean you have to shy away from cocktail umbrellas and sparklers.
Try my recipe for a Hannahtini (inspired by that yellow mesh top):
- Pineapple juice
- Peach juice
- Fresh pineapple
Add a couple of pieces of ice to your glass and fill up halfway with pineapple juice. Fill the rest of the glass with equal parts peach juice and lemonade. Garnish with a wedge of pineapple and a cocktail umbrella.
Feeling naughty? Add a sneaky shot of amaretto.
Combine some tunes from the show and a few New York classics for the ultimate Girls themed playlist.
- New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down – LCD Soundsystem
- Time to Pretend – MGMT
- Rhapsody in Blue – George Gershwin
- Bang Bang Bang – Mark Ronson & The Business Intl
- Joni Mitchell – Chelsea Morning
- Girls – Santigold
- Across 110th Street – Bobby Womack and Peace
- 99 Problems – Jay-Z
- Tom’s Diner – Suzanne Vega
- I Just Want to be Your Everything – Bee Gees
Create your own Girls bingo cards or down a shot / eat a fairy cake / do a silly dance every time the following happens:
- Hannah gets naked
- Marnie says something mean
- Shoshana wears pink
- Jessa talks about her travels
- You’ve done what’s happening on screen
Also, leave pens and pads of paper out (or better still, let your guests write on the wall). After all someone at your party might be the voice of their generation. Or at least, a voice of a generation…
Make sure to let me know if you throw your own Girls themed screening party! Enjoy x
